What started as a mother’s secret attempt to record a dream she had has turned into an international hit. Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series has topped Harry Potter on USA Today’s list of bestselling books, and Summit Entertainment will release a movie version of the first book on December 12. Twilight, the first book in the series, was on the New York Times best-seller list for a year. New Moon, the second book, found itself in a similar top spot in the U.S., Spain, and Germany. Eclipse, the third book, has sold in over 15 countries. Friday, August 1, thousands of fans gather at more than 1,500 bookstores for the midnight release of the final book in the series, Breaking Dawn.
According to Publishers Weekly, Virgin Comics, the high-profile 2006 international joint venture between Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and the India-based comics publisher Gotham Entertainment, has been shut down. The company’s New York office and publishing unit has been closed and the eight people that staff it have been laid off.
According to Publishers Weekly Amazon continues its buying spree of book related companies. Although it hasn’t confirmed it, the giant e-tailer has acquired Shelfari.com, the Seattle-based social network site for readers. In a post on his Web site yesterday, Shelfari cofounder and CEO Josh Hug told members that the company is being acquired by its Seattle neighbor and investor.
